What Should Be Prepared Before a Video Shoot?
A successful shoot takes more than a camera and a shot list. The audience, core message, distribution channels, delivery formats and approval process should be clear before production begins.
The sentence is written before the list
Nielsen Norman Group says to plan content before it is created. The goal is written. Content is not left until someone notices the mess. A design built on placeholder text does the same thing on a shoot. The list is full. The thing to be said is missing.
Content strategy defines how an organization will use content, for which goal, and for whose need. The question comes first: does this piece make sense, and is it worth the attention. The interface, the scene list, and the shooting order come after that question. A production day cannot close an unsentenced job by making it handsome.
Decisions the shoot day is waiting on
If the lines below are unwritten, the list is a wish. Each line comes before the picture that will be shot on set.
| Decision | What it answers | What happens on set if it stays unwritten |
|---|---|---|
| One sentence | What will have been said when the piece is finished | Handsome frames stand, and the piece says nothing |
| Who | Who the sentence is for, and what that person already knows | It is told to everyone, and addressed to no one |
| Place | Where the piece will stand. Length and ratio come from there | A two-minute shoot is forced into a fifteen-second place |
| Proof | Which picture carries the sentence, and which is decoration | Decoration takes the place of proof |
| Left out | What this shoot will not say | Every good idea is piled onto that day |
If the container is built first, the text is cut
A second piece from the same source describes the order of layout and content. If the container is built before the size of the text is known, the result is one of three things. A forced fit, an expensive rework, or cutting the text to the container. On a shoot the container is called a plan, a storyboard, or a list of twelve frames. The sentence is squeezed in afterwards.
A flexible container, trying the layout with existing text, and looking early are the remedies named for a page. The equivalent for a shoot is this. Let the sentence and the length be set, and let the list shorten to them. Do not let the list grow handsome and the sentence shorten to it. If the thing that shortens is the sentence, what remains is a handsome order.
Fictional example
This example is not a client record. A workshop prepares a list of fourteen frames. A cup, a counter, a hand, a street. No sentence has been written. The shoot ends well. In the edit someone writes 'fresh' over it. The word does not say why the frames stand next to each other. The list has done its job. The piece is still waiting for what it was going to say.
Before the shoot
If the questions below have no answer, the day is not early for making pictures. It is early for making the sentence. The tone on the identity side is written in the brand work. Here the question is which single sentence that tone becomes in this piece.
- Whether the one sentence that will have been said when the piece is finished is written.
- Who the sentence is for, and what that person already knows.
- Where the piece will stand, and whether length and ratio follow that place.
- Which picture is proof, and which is decoration.
- Whether what this shoot will not say is written.
- Whether the list shortened after the sentence, or the sentence shortened to fit the list.
