What Does a Corporate Identity Project Include?
An identity project is not the name of a folder. Scope is which decision is written inside the folder, and which job stays in another quote. The logo file can already be there. The scope can still be open.
Scope starts after the file
Nielsen Norman Group does not define a brand as a logo. People experience a brand in what they see, in the tone of the speech, and in behavior. The logo sits inside what they see, beside type, color and the other pieces of a guide. The writing on design systems says standards exist so a team does not invent the same decision again on every new job. Corporate identity is the list where those two sentences meet: the visible decisions, written so the next job does not have to ask them.
Why the logo file does not close the identity sits in a separate piece. This article does not repeat that split. It counts which line is inside the identity job and which is another job. On the brand side the first question is not 'is the logo ready'. It is 'is this list written'.
What stays inside the list
Until the lines below are written, an identity delivery is the delivery of a mark. Each row is a decision, not a file name. If the decision is unwritten, the next surface builds it alone.
| Line | What gets written | What happens if it stays unwritten |
|---|---|---|
| Mark system | The mark alone, with words, in one color, and in a tight space | Every surface draws its own logo |
| Color | A value, not a name. Screen and print apart | The same name becomes two colors in two places |
| Type | Heading and body families, weight, smallest size | The page does not look related to the mark |
| Clear space and refusal | The margin around the mark. The cases where it is not skewed, recolored, or written over | If the refusal is missing, every use is treated as allowed |
| An application that proves it | A few surfaces that test the system: a card, a letterhead, one cover | The rule stays on paper and breaks on the first real surface |
What stays outside until it is written
A positioning sentence, a voice, a website, a packaging line, a signage program and a photo direction can sit beside the identity. Sitting beside it does not put them inside the job. Each asks for its own effort and its own line in the quote. If the line is missing, that job was not done. It is not read as 'it was inside the identity package'.
Who is being spoken to, and why they would choose this, belongs to the positioning piece. How the sentence addresses someone is built in the voice document. What is already locked before the mark is drawn is asked in the logo brief. None of the three replaces the identity folder.
How many applications
A card can prove the system. Ten different printed jobs are ten design jobs. Scope does not grow with the sentence 'we apply it to any surface you want'. The surfaces in this delivery are named.
File format
The vector source, a one-color export, and the raster sizes that will actually be used are separate deliveries. 'All formats' does not say which size the next job needs.
Approval
Who chooses the mark, and who closes an application. The two approvals may not sit with one person. If that is unwritten, the revision round takes the place of the scope.
The first surface tests the system
A small set of applications is not there to decorate the guide. The mark with words is tested on a card, the one-color version in a single ink, the tight-space version on a small cover. Without the test, the rule breaks on the first real job and the break stays as an 'exception'.
Fictional example
This example is not a client record. A workshop receives a dark blue mark and treats the identity as finished. The quote never wrote a color value, a type family, or two applications. When the card is printed, the printer picks the blue by eye and the name is set in another typeface. The mark is in the folder. The identity has not closed on that card. The scope is open because it counted the file, not these three decisions.
Before the quote closes
If the questions below have no answer, the folder can be full and the scope is not.
- Whether the mark alone, with words, in one color, and in a tight space is in this delivery.
- Whether colors are written as values, not names, and whether screen and print are apart.
- Whether heading and body type, weight, and the smallest size are set.
- Whether clear space and the cases that will not be done are written.
- Whether the surfaces that prove the system are named one by one, and whether an unnamed surface is another job.
- Whether positioning, voice, the site, packaging and signage were left outside this quote.
- Whether the vector source and the sizes that will be used were written apart.
- Who chooses the mark, and who closes an application.
