Which Elements Determine Video Production Prices?

The fee is readable after the lines are written. Crew, shoot days, location, gear, the person in frame, animation, the edit and revisions. An empty line means the total is pricing a job that still has no name. This article separates those eight lines. It sets down no figure.

Eight lines make one total

Nielsen Norman Group asks, in the planning phase, who will create the content, who will review it and who will approve it. In a video quote that question comes before the number of days. Until the sentence and the place the film will stand are written, crew and days are guesses. The sentence itself is separated in the piece on shot lists. The order of the shoot, the edit and delivery is counted in the piece on commercial production. This article does not repeat that order. Once the order exists, it counts the lines that move the price.

The table below is a classification. It contains no fees and does not claim an official tariff exists in the market. It is there so you can see which line in a quote is filled and which is empty.

A scope line in a video quote. The classification belongs to this article. No fees.
ElementWhat the quote writesIf it stays empty
CrewWho is there that day. Camera, sound, light and production are counted apartThe word crew covers two people and a crowded set
Shoot dayHow many days. Whether setup, the shoot and wrap sit inside the dayThe day runs on with no edge written
LocationWhose place. Who asks permission. What cannot be done therePermission is left until the morning of the shoot
GearThe package is named for the shoot. A drone or a crane has its own lineThe word camera is not a package on its own
Person in frameWho appears, for how long. Where the image may be used, and for what termThe file is finished and the usage line is still empty
AnimationWhether a scene is drawn or moved. Beside the shoot, or in its placeNo shoot day is taken to mean there is no labor either
EditThe frame that stays, the sound, the graphics, and a cut for each place it will runOne master file is counted as delivery for every place
RevisionHow many rounds. Whether a round changes the cut or reopens a closed decisionEvery note opens the film from the start

Crew and days are read together

A crew list and a day count are not the same item written twice. They are read together. One day with a large crew and several days with a small crew are different jobs. The quote writes who is standing there that day. Camera, sound, light and production each show as filled or empty. This article does not hand over a standard roster. The quote writes the roster.

A day is not a box on a calendar. Setup, the shoot and wrap either sit inside that box or they do not. Moving to a second place on the same day belongs on the day line too. A day dropped because permission never came, or because of the weather, is written as someone's job. How the hour closes sits there as well. This article sets no overtime rule.

Place, gear, and the person in frame

A location is more than a street name. Who holds the place, whether they ask permission, and what may be built there. The rule belongs to the body that holds the place. The California Film Commission requires its own permit for commercial filming on state property. The application is submitted at least four business days before the first prep or shoot day. That office also requires insurance on that property. New York City draws the permit line elsewhere: equipment beyond a handheld camera or a camera on a tripod, taking exclusive use of city property, or asking to park a production vehicle. A handheld camera or a camera on a tripod, when those three are absent, does not enter that city's permit line. When a permit is required, insurance is required too. Both pages apply to that office's own property, and neither was brought here for its charges. The quote names the place you will use, the gear that will stand there, and who writes the permission.

Gear is written as the package the shoot asks for. A locked-off conversation and a product that moves do not ask for the same package. A drone, a crane or underwater work has its own line. A rental figure is not in this article.

The person in frame may be a performer, an employee or a narrator. The quote separates three things: who, how long they will be away from other work, and where the image may be used, for what term. The usage line writes scope where a contract would write law. If it is empty, the file can be finished and the film still cannot be used where it was meant to stand. How the contract is built sits outside this article. Where a music right closes stays in the commercial production piece.

Animation carries its own labor

The labor of a drawn or moved scene sits in the design, the motion and how many scenes are built. Animation laid over a live shoot does not erase the crew line or the day line. It carries both. On a job that is only animation, a camera crew and a location permission are not written for a shoot. The edit and the revisions are. This split is not a tariff. It keeps the quote from hiding animation inside the sentence that describes the shoot.

The edit closes, a revision opens

The edit line holds the frame that stays, the sound, the graphics and a cut for each place the film will run. What the ratio leaves in the frame is opened in the piece on aspect ratios. One master file is not read as delivery for every place.

A revision is a return to a cut that has been shown. A note that shortens inside the cut and a note that changes the sentence, the location or the person in frame are not the same round. The second reopens a line that had closed. Crew, days or animation are written again. When the person who gives approval is named in the quote, the round stops being a door anyone can walk through. The number of rounds is not in this article. The quote writes it.

Bring this list to the quote

A fee spoken before the list is filled is the price of a job whose lines are still empty. A production conversation fills these lines together. An item with no answer is left open in the quote, where it can be seen.

There is no fee, day rate or range in this article. A figure means something after the lines are known.

Fictional example

This example is not a client record. A bakery wants a film about the bread in the window. One quote says only video production. The other keeps the lines apart: one day in the bakery, with the owner's permission. Two people, for camera and sound, and a small light. One employee in frame. Use of the image on the site for the term the quote writes. No animation. One horizontal edit. A revision that may change the cut and may not change the sentence. The second quote counts the job. The fee of either is not in this example.

  • Who is there that day, and whether camera, sound, light and production are each written.
  • How many shoot days. Whether setup, the shoot and wrap sit inside the day. Whose job a dropped day is.
  • Whose location. Who writes the permission. What cannot be done there.
  • Whether the gear package is named for the shoot, and whether a drone or a crane has its own line.
  • Who is in frame, for how long, and where the image may be used, for what term.
  • Whether a scene is drawn or moved, and whether it sits beside the shoot or in its place.
  • Which frame, sound and graphics the edit closes, and whether each place the film will run has its own cut.
  • How many revision rounds. Whether a round changes the cut or a closed decision. Who gives approval.
